  5.     It took the combined resources of NASA and the U.S. Air
  6. Force to stage the $250 million fireworks display, but they
  7. promise it will be well worth the price. During the next two
  8. weeks, a team of scientists is planning a dazzling light show
  9. as part of a project to study the earth's magnetic fields.
  10. Fourteen canisters containing barium and lithium will be
  11. released from a satellite orbiting as high as 20,000 miles
  12. above the earth, creating a display of luminous red, green and
  13. purple clouds over much of North and South America, the Atlantic
  14. and Western Europe. Scientists hope that by monitoring the
  15. movement of the clouds, they will improve their ability to
  16. predict disturbances in the magnetic and electrical fields that
  17. surround the earth, and learn how the planet absorbs energy
  18. from the sun.
